Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Printable)

A gourmet twist on the classic grilled cheese with melty Gruyère, aromatic truffle oil, and crispy buttery bread.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sourdough or artisan bread

→ Cheese

02 - 4.2 oz Gruyère cheese, grated or thinly sliced

→ Spreads & Oils

03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
04 - 1 to 2 tsp truffle oil, white or black

→ Seasoning

05 - Freshly ground black pepper to taste
06 - Pinch of sea salt, optional

# Directions:

01 - Lay out bread slices and spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice.
02 - Flip bread over and drizzle truffle oil on the unbuttered side of two slices. Evenly distribute Gruyère cheese over the truffle oil-drizzled slices. Season lightly with black pepper and sea salt if desired.
03 - Top each cheese-laden slice with a remaining bread slice, butter side facing outward.
04 - Heat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium-low heat.
05 - Place assembled sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden brown and crisp and cheese is melted. Lower heat if bread browns too quickly before cheese melts.
06 - Remove from pan, let rest 1 minute, then slice and serve immediately.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It tastes like something youd order at a wine bar, but youre making it in your pajamas at home.
  • The truffle oil turns a humble sandwich into a quiet luxury without any fuss or fancy technique.
  • It comes together faster than most takeout orders and feels infinitely more satisfying.
02 -
  • Medium-low heat is your friend, high heat will give you burnt toast and unmelted cheese every single time.
  • Grate or slice your cheese thinly so it melts evenly, thick chunks will leave you with cold pockets and frustration.
  • Use truffle oil sparingly at first, you can always add more but you cant take it back once its too strong.
03 -
  • Press the sandwich gently with your spatula while it cooks to help the cheese melt faster and the bread crisp evenly.
  • If your bread is browning too quickly, lift the pan off the heat for a moment and lower the temperature before continuing.
  • Invest in a good quality truffle oil, the cheap stuff often tastes artificial and will ruin the whole experience.
